Ways To Motivate Yourself

Not all days are alike, some are good, some bad; some happy while some sad. In those dark days of life, all that we need is motivation and support. When things do not go as you had planned, negative thoughts cloud your mind and you lose confidence. Motivating oneself is very difficult during such times. However, note that self motivation is the best method of encouraging oneself towards success. So, if you are looking for means to motivate yourself, then take a look at the following methods and follow them regularly.

Effective Ways to Motivate Yourself

One of the most important step in self motivation is to form a real goal or target. Only when you have a set target in front of you, you can work towards it. Once you have set your target, keep in mind the following rules on how to motivate yourself.

Let Go of Fear
The greatest barrier to success is the fear of failure. ~ Sven-Goran Eriksson
Fear of failure is the biggest obstacle towards your journey of success. Therefore, as one of the best self motivation tips, you should remember that failure is a stepping stone to success and success comes to those who do not quit. Therefore, even if you fail ten times, do not give up. Remember that behind every successful person are several unknown failures which have motivated them to win! Your determination and hard work will surely lead you to success sooner or later.

Hope for a Successful Future
If you do not hope, you will not find what is beyond your hopes. ~ St. Clement of Alexandra
Hope is definitely something that makes life worth living. Therefore, when looking for ways to motivate yourself to study or to lose weight, have a hopeful attitude that will help you succeed. Along with hope, a positive attitude is also essential for a successful venture. Try and block all the negative attitude/ thoughts and even people as it will help you focus on your goal.

Plan and Execute
Plan your progress carefully; hour-by hour, day-by-day, month-by-month. Organized activity and maintained enthusiasm are the wellsprings of your power! ~ Paul J. Meyer
Now you have a set target, positive attitude and also hope to succeed; next you will need is a plan to reach the target. Write down all that you need to do everyday/ week and month in detail and follow it accordingly. You can also take the help of like-minded people for practical tips or even talk to someone who inspires you. Write quotes on self improvement and motivation in your room and read them every day!

Work Hard Towards It
I'm a great believer in luck and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it. ~ Thomas Jefferson
There is simply no option for hard work and you need to do it to reach your targeted goal. However, work smartly and learn the skill of multitasking so that you accomplish more things in a short period. One of the best ways to motivate yourself to lose weight is to work together with a partner or a like-minded group so that you are naturally motivated towards it.

Manage and Use Time Properly
Don't wait. The time will never be just right! ~ Napoleon Hill
Lastly, remember that time is your biggest asset and use it accordingly. Planning and managing your time effectively will help you achieve more in a shorter period. Let go of procrastination and start right away. Every minute and every hour is important and hence, you need to utilize it effectively.

These were some of the most effective ways to motivate yourself to exercise, to lose weight, to study or be successful in life. If you were wondering what is the success formula of famous entrepreneurs in the world, then I don't think it will be any different. Lastly, we can sum up the above with a thoughtful quote by William A. Ward.

Four steps to achievement: Plan purposefully. Prepare prayerfully. Proceed positively. Pursue persistently.

Tips To Motivated Yourself

The clock's ticking with its little hand gone a whole lot forward since the last you looked at it, the day is flying without looking at you twice and you're sitting slouched in your chair, with either irked boredom or heavy dread. What went wrong? What is it that's keeping you? A negative feeling from some silly thought?

It is a mere thought, just a thought, that sets you to go forward with leaps and bounds, or holds you back and drags you yonder and down where you feel stubbed like a hot fire that once burned with a steady ongoing passion, put out by the cold water of fear and now lays forlorn in the scattered, wet ashes of lack of motivation.

How are you going to recapture that sunny optimism that you started out with? It wasn't mindless optimism! It was a well-balanced beaming hope for things to work out, and an inner strength of a belief that they will. But somewhere along the way, due to one blunder or another, you may have given up and thought - "Well, It's not worth the effort!" or "Well, I can't do it!" Listen to what you told yourself before you gave up. What was that precise thought? What made you throw your hands up in the air and then feel sunken with misery of a failure which is only in your head?

"Half of the failures in life come from pulling one's horse when he is leaping." - Thomas Hood

We have our times where we really feel good about something and jump up to it and say "Hey, I'm going to make this work!" and in the next breath due to one little error or another (which is usually to happen in any given case), you say, "Oh! What was I thinking?" These things alone, are enough to pull down your confidence and make you feel less and less and still less motivated. Motivation may come from support of those you love and those who love you back, but by the end of it it's the age-old traditional method that refuses to go, which is "Do it yourself!" So, how to motivate yourself?

When everything else outside seems to scream "No!", listen to yourself! Our subconscious is more of "Yeses" than "Nos"!

When you feel like your self-motivation has hit a jagged rock-bottom, assign yourself simple tasks that are easy to do. A lot of times if you give yourself laborious challenges to assert to yourself your motivation, and then give up half way, it would just be absolutely no good and leave you feeling worse than ever!

Tidy your desk, get out for a walk under the smiling sun or under crimson skies. Walking always helps clear any dingy stagnant thoughts. There is a huge satisfaction gained in the process of doing and completing simple things, and a spring of boost in confidence too.

Whenever you talk to yourself, don't frame negative questions such as, "Why am I so bored?" Instead, ask yourself, "What can I do to make it better?" You'll be amazed at the outstanding number of solutions you get to that particular question, and you'll see how your mind and mood turn around from being passive to being optimistically active again.

"Only as high as I reach can I grow, only as far as I seek can I go, only as deep as I look can I see, only as much as I dream can I be." - Karen Ravn

Don't underestimate the value of being organized, having a clean room, a clean desk and putting everything in place. Cluttered surroundings make the mind filled with a chaotic jungle of cluttered thoughts, leaving no room for you to be able to feel organized in your internal being.

If you feel under too much pressure either from your parents, peers, work colleagues, or boss, ask yourself who are you doing it for? By the end of it, and as selfish as it may sound, everything we do is to gain satisfaction for ourselves, even if it means selfless social work. Seeing others happy in itself is our own happiness, and there is nothing wrong with wanting to do things for yourself.

Even professional athletes and sportsmen, despite the cheering of the crowd, face a lot of pre-game anxiety, that comes markedly due to the pressure of expectation. When you focus your energies into the work you're doing and not what others are expecting, you are bound to do it better.

A lot of people face lack of motivation when it comes to working out. The paragraph that follows tells a little about what you can do to get your motivation and you back into a better shape.

Working out is no sweat!

If you're deprived of motivation to exercise, think about the results of exercising. Don't terrify yourself by thinking that exercising is whipping your body to torture and into shape. Exercise is not so much pain and with the right attitude can be tremendous fun, releasing endorphins into your bloodstream, that give you a natural, sweetly intense rush.

Be realistic about your body-size and what you want to achieve in how much time. Talking to your personal fitness trainer is best when you're trying to set your goals and knowing how to go about it. Writing these down becomes a powerful incentive.

Be 'in the moment' when you exercise instead of traveling to other thoughts. Your goal should be something that is challenging yet achievable, so if you're a little on the heavy side, don't surround yourself with pictures and posters of scrawny models and surrender yourself to the animosity of this kind of wishful thinking.

Instead of saying you want to lose your weight, it's better to say that you want to reach your ideal weight. Make the purpose behind your goal clear to yourself, it will certainly help you in the long run to achieve it as there will be no confusion about it.

Are exams breathing down your neck?

Plenty of times, students have the ends of their pencils half-chewed, ruffled, miserable-looking hair and furrowed frowns of anxiety right before their exams. It's quite, quite normal for students to feel in their stomach as though they've swallowed a quart of butterflies, in this time. There are some ways to make it easier on yourself without bothering your head too much.

Make your revisions like a marathon and not sprints. You can always start out early in the day, but make sure you don't exhaust yourself out the night before. Sleep is medicine and you'll be able to remember much more after a quick power-nap than if you struggle to swallow in huge portions of text knowing that your mind and body are groaning of lack of sleep.

Get out to enjoy the breeze and take heart from nature and the weather. It always is a good change if things start getting monotonous. You work best if you take regular breaks (but don't overdo it). If you deprive yourself of breaks, studying starts getting more and more monotonous and hence boring.

Stress is a good motivational factor to study. But huge amounts of it resulting into lack of sleep, or eating problems is when you need to take time out to talk to your guide or friend or teacher about ways to relax. Exercise regularly and maintain a healthy diet, which means avoiding junk foods as they sap tremendous amounts of energy and leave you feeling dulled out.

Make flow-charts and drawings of topics you may find difficult. Use visual aids as these are more beneficial than simply reading words that may seem a little mundane. Summarizing and writing things down after you've read them is a great way to remember notes. Discussing them further with a friend is an excellent idea, because when you say it again, you are bound not to forget it easily.

And finally remember, you're going to certainly get good grades for what you remember and not penalized for what you don't. So keep a positive attitude, get enough amount of sleep, take breaks, keep your mind fresh and active, eat healthy food and then go strutting with confidence to your exam, knowing it's going to be fantastic and even more fantastic are your holidays awaiting on the other side of it, where you can sunbathe to your heart's content!

There is no best, but there is always a better!

Feeling demotivated may be an effect due to some sort of underlying depression or fear. A lot of people who feel demotivated are misunderstood, as it isn't the motivation they lack entirely, but are very deeply sensitive to getting everything 'right'; which means that they have an overt tendency to be perfectionists. It isn't bad to be a perfectionist, but it can get that way if it has been a hindrance to what you've set yourself to achieve. Know that you can always do something better by being innovative in your approach or by adapting to those you or someone else has already used to do a particular task.

Fear of mistakes kills all creativity, and no creativity can be put forth if you don't take a chance. Creativity requires courage to take a risk, with the knowledge that you may face consequences that aren't always positive. Be creative in your approach and outlook toward life, and it can bring about a whole wind of change that is capable of wondrous transformations.

Popular techniques of visualization, meditation, exercise and affirmation help you with your clarity of thought so that you don't bumble too much, once you set to achieve what it is that you want to. When you visualize something and you see it happen in your mind, and breathe it in like it's real, it's half your battle won! There is great power in believing. It takes the spanner out of your works with incredible results!

Motivating Yourself To Run - How?

This portion of the article is set to deliver some great ways to keep yourself motivated to run, but before that, let me introduce to you a self-invented form of motivation. It's called Running motivation; a form of incentive that runs within you 24x7 and helps you to pace up regularly. If you let motivation be on a perpetual R and R (rest and recreation), you sure, would not be in the position to run regularly. Here are some useful methods to motivate yourself.

Slash the Buts!
Our goals are more often than not, punctuated with 'If's and But's'. Unfortunately, there is no room for them out here. When we talk incentive, we talk power; we talk dedication and not compulsion. Set a reasonable routine; one that you can follow. Plan out your schedule in a way that aids you to fit a run during the day.

A New Street, A New Beginning
What better way to start your day than surfing the streets, especially those you haven't set foot till date. At least, you have something to look forward to, before the sun is out, staring at you. Motivate yourself to visit a new nook, a never-seen-before cranny. You are sure to discover new places. Nevertheless, if you are an old-timer, there is no harm in admiring naked streets minus the hubbub!

'Hit' the Sack
Well, I mean that literally! Ditch the Z's in you and go for a run early morning. There is nothing like an early morning run because, as the day progresses, the to-do list seems never-ending and we have a whole lot of commitments to fulfill. A majority reasons, that it is due to the fatigue they are met with throughout the day, that they are unable to give up on their snooze. Set an alarm tone that can knock your sock's off, put on your running gear and get going.

Bring out the Blogger in You
Why not write a blog on running, about 'you running' regularly! What changes do you observe in yourself after you have taken to running daily or what is it that you came across while you were out for a run... something unusual, serene or something that tickled your funny bone. Update your status and keep your followers or readers versed with what's happening!

Ping-a-friend(s)
Hmm... this one scores high! Let your friends and family know that you are on a mad-dash mission of losing belly fat, keeping fit, controlling your cholesterol hike, or flaunt a marble smooth skin. Don't make a public announcement but make your mission known. This will motivate you to reach your goal faster, as you are now, answerable to someone!

Fitness Freaks, Anyone!
Keep company of those who are fitness oriented, more so, if you have been hibernating for long. Friends with the same or similar goals can keep your spirits high. They could be the factors to keep you at it regularly. Starting it out is difficult, agreed, but staying at it is a challenge. If you are around friends, who are as kicked about the goal as much as you are, and want to see a difference in themselves, you sure, are on the right path.

Looks can Kill
Washboard abs and chiseled arms rule the roost. If this is your goal, then make sure you achieve it, by hook or by crook! However, it is not required that all have a dream body, but it is certainly possible to stay fit and fine. Tucking that extra tummy fat or toning those flabby arms can make you look better and feel, even better. A way to motivate yourself thoroughly is to take pictures of yourself before you start off with your workout. Stick it on the soft-board, adjacent to a picture of the one you admire.

Treadmill Tricks
The weather does not permit you to go for a run; don't consider this as an excuse to miss your running routine. If you miss once, you can miss twice and... the rest is history. It is unlikely that you revert to your set routine once you have stepped off it. Running on the treadmill is one alternative that you can put to practice when the forecast does not favor a run, out in the open. Well, to motivate yourself to run on the treadmill doesn't require that much effort. Drop your favorite, rather upbeat tracks that aid you to feel motivated while you run on the treadmill. When on a treadmill, you don't even have to worry about the surroundings or where you are heading to. You are free to go in a trance while you run. Just keep running!

Be-friend your Runs
Going along with a friend for a run regularly makes a lot of difference to your motivation meter. Besides you sharing a run, you can share a laugh or two, mutter about a subject of common interest or just pep-up each others spirits. When you look at your partner pushing hard at reaching his goal, you would like to push a tad harder. While you work out, you need something to kill time. I advise, don't kill time, live it thoroughly by bonding with your running partner and have a good time conversing, and of course running!

Health is Wealth
This too ranks high on the charts of all motivated-to-run souls. Running is a great exercise not just to burn calories, but to burn those high levels of cholesterol. Obesity is a prime factor that leads to health crises. It is absolutely needless to confirm, how running helps flush off toxicities from the body, making one feel rejuvenated and full of life. If not for a body to die for, make an effort to improve the quality of life you lead. If you suffer from an ailment and want to fight the same, make placards with quotes that urge you to push your limits, and pin them up in places you frequent the most. Motivational quotes like these may help:
  • "Running is the greatest metaphor for life, because you get out of it what you put into it." - Oprah Winfrey
  • "A runner must run with dreams in his heart." - Emil Zatopek
  • "Fire up your boots to boost up your tomorrow" - Self
  • "Walk today to run tomorrow,
Run tomorrow to stagger never, hereafter"
    - Self
It is heartening to see grandparents and our very own moms going for a run, however, it is equally annoying to see people half their age swinging in their comfy sofas whiling away their time and health. Buckle-up before your health outruns you and get motivated right away. Run... Keep running!

Migraine..

A migraine is a common type of headache that may occur with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, or sensitivity to light. In many people, a throbbing pain is felt only on one side of the head. Some people who get migraines have warning symptoms, called an aura, before the actual headache begins. An aura is a group of symptoms, usually vision disturbances, that serve as a warning sign that a bad headache is coming. Most people, however, do not have such warning signs.

Symptoms

Vision disturbances, or aura, are considered a "warning sign" that a migraine is coming. The aura occurs in both eyes and may involve any or all of the following:
  • A temporary blind spot
  • Blurred vision
  • Eye pain
  • Seeing stars or zigzag lines
  • Tunnel vision
Not every person with migraines has an aura. Those who do usually develop one about 10 - 15 minutes before the headache. However, it may occur just a few minutes to 24 hours beforehand.
Migraine headaches can be dull or severe. The pain may be felt behind the eye or in the back of the head and neck. For many patients, the headaches start on the same side each time. The headaches usually:
  • Feel throbbing, pounding, or pulsating
  • Are worse on one side of the head
  • Start as a dull ache and get worse within minutes to hours
  • Last 6 to 48 hours
Other symptoms that may occur with the headache include:
  • Chills
  • Increased urination
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness
  • Problems concentrating, trouble finding words
  • Sensitivity to light or sound
  • Sweating
Symptoms that may linger even after the migraine has gone away include:
  • Feeling mentally dull, like your thinking is not clear or sharp
  • Increased need for sleep
  • Neck pain

Causes & Risk Factors

A migraine is caused by abnormal brain activity, which is triggered by stress, certain foods, environmental factors, or something else. However, the exact chain of events remains unclear.
Scientists used to believe that migraines were due to changes in blood vessels within the brain. Today, most medical experts believe the attack actually begins in the brain itself, where it involves various nerve pathways and chemicals. The changes affect blood flow in the brain and surrounding tissues.
Migraine attacks may be triggered by:
  • Alcohol
  • Allergic reactions
  • Bright lights
  • Certain odors or perfumes
  • Changes in hormone levels (which can occur during a woman's menstrual cycle or with the use of birth control pills)
  • Changes in sleep patterns
  • Exercise
  • Loud noises
  • Missed meals
  • Physical or emotional stress
  • Smoking or exposure to smoke
Certain foods and preservatives in foods may trigger migraines in some people. Food-related triggers may include:
  • Any processed, fermented, pickled, or marinated foods
  • Baked goods
  • Chocolate
  • Dairy products
  • Foods containing monosodium glutamate (MSG)
  • Foods containing tyramine, which includes red wine, aged cheese, smoked fish, chicken livers, figs, and certain beans
  • Fruits (avocado, banana, citrus fruit)
  • Meats containing nitrates (bacon, hot dogs, salami, cured meats)
  • Nuts
  • Onions
  • Peanut butter
This list may not be all-inclusive.
True migraine headaches are not a result of a brain tumor or other serious medical problem. However, only an experienced health care provider can determine whether your symptoms are due to a migraine or another condition.

Zapin Dance

It is believed that Muslim missionaries of the Middle East namely Persia and Arabia introduced the dance to Malaya during the fifteenth century. The dance was originally performed by males only however it is also performed by female dancers these days. The simple version of the Zapin is performed to the rhythm &1234 and the foot is extended out to the side on the last count. It can be done on the spot, traveling forwards and backwards or diagonally in the basic form. The carriage of the dancers is quite erect and dignified.

The music for Zapin comes from an ensemble of traditional instruments which include the lute (gambus), gypsy-type bongos (marwas) and the violin. There are no hard and fast rules as to the number of dancers that perform. However because of the very interactive nature of this dance, it is usually performed in pairs. The dancers can then play with each other, teasing, challenging and enjoying each others company. It is most popular in Johor.

There are numerous forms of Zapin dances and it varies from state to state. One of the most popular forms and certainly more evolved and intricate is the Zapin Tenglu from the town of Mersing. Said to be inspired by the ebb and flow of the tide and the lives of fishermen, the dance has many unexpected movements like a rotation of the body from the waist followed by a sudden accented, sharp and held movement of the arms and shoulders. It is said that these movements are derived from the feeling of being tossed around in a fishing boat and having to catch yourself before you are thrown overboard.

A Dreamer's Motivations To Keep Moving Forward

Do you have a deep desire to achieve something great? Do you want to live a more satisfying life? Can you see yourself being happy and successful in every way? Do you believe in your own potential and that here is much more to you than meets the eye? If so, you are a dreamer. A dreamer is a person who is not afraid to challenge society’s norms and not afraid to tread their own path rather than following the well-trodden path. A dreamer is someone who is always willing to take a chance and always asks why before doing something that others are doing blindly. A dreamer is a person who has a great futuristic picture which they work to achieve at all costs. Dreamers are world changers.

Following your dreams, however, is a process and comes at a price. What is the process and what is the price to be paid? Be patient. All will be revealed. Patience, by the way is part of it. Get-rich-quick and easy success schemes don’t last. Brian Tracy states that “all successful men and women are big dreamers. They imagine what their future could be, ideal in every respect, and then they work every day toward their distant vision, that goal or purpose.” Sadly but true, and in the words of Myles Munroe - “The poorest man in the world is the man without a dream. The most frustrated man in the world is the man with a dream that never becomes reality.”

You must plan your life with much more care and attention than you would plan your business and your work. Stop living by waiting on chance and luck to make you happy, rich or healthy. If most of us put just half the effort we put into our jobs into planning our lives we would be amazed at the difference that would make. You can take that first step of creating the life you want right now. One thing is for sure. The past is dead and gone. We can’t go back there. The future is the only thing we have control over. Right here and right now is the only time we have that control.

Similarly, the mind of man has unlimited potential. It has the limitless ability to create. Man has been on earth for thousands of years, yet we are still making new discoveries today and creating new things everyday. We cannot exhaust the creative power of our minds. The functioning of our minds remains, for the most part, a mystery even to modern day science. But even though we do not understand it’s functioning, we cannot deny its power. “Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve.” These are the immortal words of Napoleon Hill, a man who truly understood that “there are no limitations to the mind except those we acknowledge.” Marianne Williamson said – “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?”

It is the most important asset you will ever possess. Like most things in life, it is something everyone has, yet few utilize it well. While we all look to the outside to find the secrets to success, wealth and happiness, we neglect and disregard the power within ourselves: our own minds. The mind can be defined as “the human consciousness that originates in the brain and is manifested especially in thought, perception, emotion, will, memory and imagination.” One of the most enlightening and inspiring books I have ever read is “As a man thinketh” by James Allen. In this book he compares the mind to a garden. He says: “A man’s mind may be likened to a garden, which may be intelligently cultivated or allowed to run wild; but whether cultivated or neglected, it must and will bring forth. If no useful seeds are put into it, then an abundance of useless weed-seeds will fall therein, and will continue to produce their kind.”

There is a reason why a lot of people don’t believe in positive thinking and that kind of thing. It is simply that they do not want to face the fact that their lives are totally in their own hands and they are afraid of the immense potential/results if they do so. Believing in positive thinking would mean that they cannot blame their lack of education, their parents, teacher or spouse for their failures. It is much easier to think there is some force out there called “destiny” that is just against you and takes pleasure in seeing you suffer. If only this didn’t happen or that had happened, you would be so much better off.

“Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help with man with the wrong mental attitude.” says W.W. Ziege. The truth is that while you are not totally responsible for what does and doesn’t happen to you, you are responsible for how you respond to what happens to you. The truth also involves acknowledging that there are some things that are within your control and others that you cannot do anything about. If you focus your time and energy on the things you can change and stop worrying about the things you cannot change, your life will improve immeasurably.

There is a big difference between wishing and being a dreamer. Dreamers design their ideal life and work to achieve it everyday. They don’t believe in chance or luck. Wishers wait on a genii to grant their three wishes all their lives. The problem is, if the genii were to ever show up they still wouldn’t know what to wish for! Mark Victor Hansen concludes: “You control your future, your destiny. What you think about comes about. By recording your dreams and goals on paper, you set in motion the process of becoming the person you most want to be. Put your future in good hands: your own.”

Mental Health Issues

A mental disorder or mental illness is a psychological or behavioral pattern generally associated with subjective distress or disability that occurs in an individual, and which is not a part of normal development or culture. Such a disorder may consist of a combination of affective, behavioural, cognitive and perceptual components. The recognition and understanding of mental health conditions have changed over time and across cultures, and there are still variations in the definition, assessment, and classification of mental disorders, although standard guideline criteria are widely accepted. A few mental disorders are diagnosed based on the harm to others, regardless of the subject's perception of distress. Over a third of people in most countries report meeting criteria for the major categories at some point in their lives. The causes are often explained in terms of a diathesis-stress model or biopsychosocial model. In biological psychiatry, mental disorders are conceptualized as disorders of brain circuits likely caused by developmental processes shaped by a complex interplay of genetics and experience.

"Within the borough unemployment rates among people with longer-term mental health problems increased steadily during the 1990s, despite a decreasing rate of general unemployment for the majority of that period. Unemployment among people with long-term mental health problems increased from 80% in 1990 to 92% in 1999, and the unemployment rates among those with a diagnosis of schizophrenia increased from 88% in 1990 to 96% in 1999. "- Vincent Willem van Gogh

"The bigger issue was this culture change that we eventually implemented which simply did not accept the notion that people would kill themselves, the idea that zero would be our goal,"- Ed Coffey

Mental health is about the ability to be at ease with oneself, cope with daily problems and challenges, maintain a harmonious relationship with others and be able to take part in community activities and contribute to the community. Of late there has been an increase in the number of incidents involving persons with mental health disorders. It has also been found that social ills, divorce, child abuse and baby dumping are also a reflection of the mental health status of the population.Incidents such as the stabbing of her own children by a depressed mother, the attack on policeman by insane persons and depressed students committing suicide as well as other unreported cases clearly indicate that mental health problems are on the rise.

Worldwide, mental and behavioural disorders have shown to account for 10% of the Global Disease Burden in 1990. This is predicted to increase by 15% in 2020.
Psychiatric disorders and other forms of mental illness are tragic reminders of another side of life which must not be overlooked in our quest to become a fully industrialised nation. The impact of mental health problems on the people and their families as well as society as a whole is immense and needs to be addressed.

There is no simple answer to this question as there are lots of reasons why someone might develop a mental illness. They might inherit it from their family, it might be because of their lifestyle or it might be because of things that have happened to them in the past. Usually it is a combination of all of these. The reasons for someone developing a mental illness are often broken down into groups. They can be:

  • Physical
  • Social
  • Environmental
  • Psychological
Physical causes are those which are biological in nature. Someone might inherit characteristic from their family through their genes which mean they are much more at risk than other people. It has also been found that people who have suffered head injuries can experience changes to their personality, and in some cases may begin to experience schizophrenia and psychotic type symptoms.

Things that are going on around us, and how we feel about them can have a big impact on our mental health. The physical environment where we live can be very stressful, particularly when there are problems with neighbours, or if there are high crime rates and other such issues. When we face difficult times our support networks become very important – those who do not have close friends or families, or those who do not live near the people who support them may find it increasingly difficult to cope alone.

Your psychological state can influence your mental and emotional state, particularly if you are are coping with traumatic and abusive past or current experiences. Significant life events, like bereavement, divorce or if you have self-destructive thought patterns and perceptions, can impact on your mental health.

CHOLESTEROL SYMPTOMS

Cholesterol is a waxy steroid of fat that is produced in the liver or intestines. It is used to produce hormones and cell membranes and is transported in the blood plasma of all mammals. It is an essential structural component of mammalian cell membranes and is required to establish proper membrane permeability and fluidity. In addition, cholesterol is an important component for the manufacture of bile acids, steroid hormones, and vitamin D. Cholesterol is the principal sterol synthesized by animals; however, small quantities can be synthesized in other eukaryotes such as plants and fungi. It is almost completely absent among prokaryotes including bacteria. Although cholesterol is important and necessary for mammals, high levels of cholesterol in the blood can damage arteries and are potentially linked to diseases such as those associated with the cardiovascular system (heart disease).

We are often asked "what are high cholesterol symptoms"? Many people have been told that they have high cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia), many more think they have high cholesterol, but are not sure what it is or how to measure it.  We are frequently asked if there is a specific high cholesterol symptom or collection of high cholesterol symptoms that will help people identify if they have a problem or are likely to have a problem with hypercholesterolemia.

This is somewhat of a difficult question, not least because high cholesterol is itself a symptom of another problem - namely Vitamin C deficiency (chronic scurvy), as identified by twice Nobel laureate, Linus Pauling in the 1970s.  As a result, the symptoms you would expect to be associated with hypercholesterolemia as actually the symptoms of chronic scurvy, namely leaky blood vessels, and desperate attempts by the body to block those leaks, usually with its most easily available filler - cholesterol!

Now, you may think scurvy is a thing of the past, and, in its acute form, which killed huge amounts of sailors and those who used to travel by sea, it is.  However, along with many other nutrients, such as the other vitamins and minerals, essential fatty acids and trace elements, the diet of most people (and especially the North American diet) in the Western World is so nutritionally deficient that chronic diseases that never used to exist are killing more and more people every year.

High cholesterol symptoms can be totally undetectable. In fact you may never feel any high cholesterol symptoms. You can only find out for certain if you have high cholesterol only after a check up by a doctor that includes taking a blood sample. You may not see any symptoms until it is too late. That's why this is very important:-

Check your cholesterol level before you have a heart attack or stroke.

Financial Planning

Peace of mind and financial success come from taking control and following a plan. Such a plan must be tailored to your personal circumstances and objectives and executed with great care to maximize wealth creation and its protection. A big component of modern financial planning is evaluating not only the resources you have and how to manage them, it also encompasses reviewing your risk profile to determine things like adequate insurance so you are not dependent upon your own “nest egg” should a financial or medical emergency arise.

Organizing your financial world is like stretching before a good workout. Few people like to do it, but the preparation is critical. Relaxed muscles and tendons are now more conditioned to actually do the work set before them. It’s the same with your finances. By honestly and accurately assessing your financial world, you will condition your mind to be ready for the work before you. It’s not easy…but then again, nothing that is worth doing ever is.

Does the idea of putting money to work for you seem like a totally foreign concept? Can you imagine the day where…instead of getting up to go work for money…money instead works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for you? If you can not, then let me encourage you to change your thinking! The ultimate goal of financial planning is to set in place the checks and balances necessary to move you from working for money to making your money work for you. A million dollars may seem like a lot of money given your current financial outlook, but saving and investing your way to this sum is extremely doable. Putting money to work for you is the ultimate goal of financial planning, and if you aren’t thinking in those term..

THE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD HEALTH

For a comfortable living, the importance of good health cannot be overstated. Inappropriate health makes us vulnerable to invasion by dangerous diseases and results in a shortened life span. The great news is that good health is fairly easy to achieve. All it requires is determination, drive and willingness to make small changes in your life style. To make the process of transition as painless as possible, it is best to start off slowly and implement small changes in phases.

The most important facet of good health is adequate exercise. Exercises help us achieve good health by strengthening our cardio-vascular system, strengthening our muscle mass and reducing the affect of stress on the body. To ensure that exercises do not appear to be chores, it is best to find exercises that you enjoy doing rather than those that you dread. For those who prefer to be outdoors, trekking, hiking, jogging or running may be the appropriate exercise to take up. On the other hand, for those who enjoy swimming, membership to a local pool may be the answer.

There are many alternative forms of exercise that you may find beneficial. Yoga is a very popular form of exercise that helps to strengthen your body, helps you lose weight, and is great as a stress reliever. Pilates is also very poplar and deals with the core strength of your abdominals. No matter what your interests are, you are sure to find an exercise that interests you.

Another essential part of achieving and maintaining good health is changing eating habits to a healthy eating style. Poor eating habits sometimes seem like an especially daunting task - most people try to completely change what they eat. Instead of a radical change, try starting off slowly with something simple, such as adding a small salad to your dinner, or try a piece of fruit or cheese for dessert rather than ice cream. You don't need to eliminate all junk foods entirely, but if you make an effort to only eat them in moderation and make sure the bulk of what you consume is nutritious and full of vitamins and minerals, you'll move a long way towards healthy eating.

One thing to work towards eliminating in your diet is over- processed foods. Some people rely upon the convenience of pre-packaged frozen foods that they can just pop in the microwave for a few minutes and create a "complete" meal.

A healthier approach would be to make several nutritious meals on Sunday night and freeze portions of it. This way you still maintain the convenience of fast meals but you also know what ingredients are used in the preparation. By making small changes to your life you can be eating healthier in no time.

Excessive smoking or drinking is certainly detrimental to your good health. It's okay to occasionally imbibe, a few drinks once in a while are fine, and small amounts of red wine are actually good for you, but there is no such exception for smoking. If you smoke, go talk to your doctor to discuss a smoking cessation program. Smoking endangers your health and the health of those around you. The sooner you quit smoking, the faster your body can begin to repair the years of damage.

Good health is easy to achieve but you need to make changes in your diet and lifestyle now. Start by walking up the stairs at work instead of taking the elevator. Or swap that hamburger and fries you were going to have for lunch for a wrap and a salad. Small changes are the best way to start and by doing it now you can enjoy good health well into your golden years.
